Lachlan Hollands reflects on how mentorship turns clinical research theory into sound judgement, confidence, and real-world capability.

Just over a year ago, I stepped into clinical research as a Clinical Trials Assistant with little practical experience beyond what I had learned at university. Now, as a Clinical Research Associate and Clinical Data Associate, I find myself reflecting on that journey. I understood the theory and the terminology, but the reality of clinical trials is far more nuanced. What made the difference in bridging that gap wasn’t just reading SOPs or training modules, it was mentorship.

At Mobius, I’ve been fortunate to learn from a diverse, supportive, and genuinely enthusiastic team. That experience has shaped not only my technical development but also how I view growth in this industry.

Here’s why mentorship is so critical in clinical research:

1. Bridging Theory and Real-World Complexity

Clinical trials are detail-oriented and highly regulated, where small errors can have significant consequences. Mentorship helps translate theory into practice, guiding you through real scenarios, not just processes on paper. Early on, much of the work can feel like QCing documents with limited context, but real understanding comes from exposure, watching monitoring visits occur, being involved in report writing, and seeing the full lifecycle of key documents like monitoring plans and safety plans that pass across a CTA’s desk day to day. It provides context to the “why” behind tasks, which is essential for developing true competence.

2. Creating a Supportive Learning Environment

Early in your career, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, especially in a field where the devil is in the detail. Having a team that reviews your work, helps you identify mistakes, and shows you how to fix them is invaluable. My peers were always willing to sit with me for extended periods, working through challenges together. That level of support builds both competence and confidence.

3. Growth Through Responsibility and Early Exposure

One of the most impactful aspects of my experience at Mobius has been the balance between support and independence. As a CTA, you’re not just working in the background, you’re given meaningful responsibility early on. This includes exposure to sponsor communication, which helps build confidence and an understanding of relationship dynamics beyond internal team discussions. Mobius also invested in my development by bringing me along to on-site monitoring visits with experienced colleagues, providing invaluable hands-on exposure. That level of trust and opportunity accelerates both professional and personal growth.

4. Accelerated Growth Through Diverse Expertise

My growth over the past year has been exponential. I’ve had the opportunity to “pinball” across our team, learning from colleagues who specialise in different indications, some with deep device expertise, others with strong regulatory knowledge, and others experienced in budgeting and study operations. This exposure has allowed me to develop a well-rounded understanding of clinical trials across multiple scenarios and therapeutic areas. Through this, I’ve progressed into a confident monitor, equipped to navigate the complexities of different studies.

5. Paying It Forward: From Mentee to Mentor

One of the most rewarding parts of my journey so far is being able to contribute to the development of others. Having received strong mentorship myself, I’ve had the opportunity to support peers in their own learning. It reinforces the idea that mentorship isn’t a one-way process; it is a cycle that strengthens teams over time.

6. Shared Purpose: The Impact on Patients

One of the most exciting aspects of starting out in clinical research at Mobius is the shared sense of purpose across the team. There is a genuine enthusiasm for the impact that novel and innovative devices or pharmaceuticals may have on patients. Mentors and peers frequently discuss the intricacies of trial endpoints, reinforcing not just how studies are run, but why they matter. Early on, there is a strong emphasis on designing and conducting studies that are both regulatorily compliant and aligned with the core objectives, ensuring meaningful, high-quality outcomes.

Reflecting on my first year, mentorship has been fundamental to my growth. Due to strong mentorship, I was able to progress quickly and now have three months of experience in independent monitoring. It has shaped how I approach challenges, collaborate with others, and continue developing in this field.

As clinical research continues to evolve, investing in mentorship isn’t optional; it is essential. Strong teams don’t just deliver high-quality research; they build people who will carry that standard forward.
